The Department of chemistry was the first department to start functioning from the year 1973 in the erstwhile Post Graduate Centre of the University of Madras. The department of chemistry is offering M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes. There are two main areas of research namely synthetic inorganic chemistry and synthetic organic chemistry. At present, the department has five professors, a reader and a lecturer. The seven faculty members working in the department are engaged in guiding M.Phil. and Ph.D. scholars besides teaching and guiding M.Sc. students. Recently, the department has started a new self supportive course (Organic Chemistry) along with a new PG diplomo course.
During the last 34 years the department has achieved remarkable progress in terms of research output. More than 160 students have obtained their M.Phil. degrees and about 57 scholars have obtained their Ph.D. degree from the department so far. As many as 300 research papers have been published both in national and international journals. The faculty members have undertaken several major research projects funded by CSIR , DST and UGC. The academic standard of the department is reflected from the fact that at least one M.Sc. student of our department joins IIT/IISc for Ph.D. programme every year. The scholars who have obtained their Ph.D. degree from our department have been employed as scientists in Industries or as Postdoctoral Fellows in Universities of U.S.A., Japan and South Korea. Many refresher courses in chemistry have been conducted for the college teachers by the department in association with the Academic Staff College of our University.
