The erstwhile Autonomous Post-Graduate Centre of the University of Madras functioning in Coimbatore since 1973, was inducted with the Department of Economics during 1976-77. Subsequently, this formed one of the nine academic departments with which the Bharathiyar University came into existence in February 1982. Until the academic year 1988-89, the Department was offering research programmes leading to M.Phil and Ph.D. degrees. During the academic year 1988-89, the Department started offering a hybrid Postgraduate programme in Applied Economics. The Master of Business Economics (M.B.E) Programme is based on the Business Management Models practiced in developed economies was introduced during the academic year 1999-2000 in the place of M.A. Applied Economics. During the academic year 2001-2002 Choice Based Credit System was introduced to all the departments in the University.
The department with the faculty strength of six at present offers M.A. Economics, M.Phil and Doctoral Programme. About 266 students have obtained their M.Phil degrees and about 84 scholars have obtained their Ph.D. degree from the department so far.
For effective teaching and research, the department has adequate number of computers (36 personal computers) with wifi facility. For modern teaching, the department has a 2 smart classrooms equipped with computer and the LCD projector. Every member of the faculty has personal computers and laptops with internet connection and the Research Scholars room also has adequate number of computers with internet connections.
The faculty members have undertaken several major research projects funded by UGC, ICSSR, Government of Tamil Nadu, Gulf of Manner Biosphere Reserve Trust (A joint venture of UNDP, Government of Tamil Nadu and Government of India), etc. So far, the department has completed 26 Projects and about 10 Projects are under progress.
Department of Economics was sanctioned with UGC-Special Assistant Programme (SAP) –Department Research Scheme phase I with grant a Rs. 40.00 lakhs for the period 01.04.2004 to 31.03.2009. Further, the second phase of UGC-SAP was methodology courses, remedial coaching for students, development of infrastructural facilities in the Department.
The highlight of our department is, UGC has sanctioned UGC-SAP-DRS I scheme with an amount Rs. 40 lakhs from 01.04.2004 to 31.03.2009 and it has extended its financial support under UGC-SAP-DRS II scheme with an amount of Rs. 40 lakhs from 01.04.2011 to 31.03.2016.
