Dr. A. Ganapathi, Former Head of Biotechnology Department of Bharathidasan University has assumed as the new vice-chancellor of Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. Born in an agrarian family in Naduvalur Village, Near Puthanampatty .Thuraiyur Taluk, Tiruchirappalli District, he underwent his education in government institutions upto his PG Degree.
After his Ph.D. Degree in Botany obtained from University of Madras in 1986, he joined as Asst. Professor of Botany in Bharathidasan University. During his 35 year-long teaching and research career; he had received Rs. 4 Crore from various funding agencies of Government of India to carryout various research projects in the field of Botany and Biotechnology.
He has produced 32 Ph.D. and 42 M.Phil. scholars so far. His notable achievements include the publication of 146 Research Articles in International Biotechnology Journals with the significant h-index of 25. He has been the reviewer of research articles in highly reputed international biotechnology journals. He has acted as a member in the national level biotechnology committee to monitor researches related to transgenic crops.
Dr. A. Ganapathi has initiated MoU with several private biotechnology companies including Bejo Sheetal Pvt. Ltd., Maharastra to carryout genetic improvement of soybean and sugarcane cultivars. The research papers on tissue culture and genetic engineering of blackgram, cowpea, cucumber, and withania have received many international appreciations and awards. He visited Singapore, Australia, South Korea, Israel and the USA and brought back several joint international projects to Bharathidasan University.
After his retirement in 2012, the University Grants Commission of India (UGC) has awarded him the coveted UGCEmeritus Fellowship to carryout research projects in Bharathidasan University. He has a small family with his wife Mrs. G. Swarnalatha, son Dr. G. Ezhil Vikram and daughter Dr. G. Anusha, both have completed their medical degrees recently.
