- Bioremediation - Phytoremediation
-
Phytoremediation is an eco-friendly and cost effective technology which involves the use of plants and its associated microbes to remove pollutants from air, soil and water. The overall objectives of our research are a) to identify suitable plants with the potential to yield high biomass and withstand the multi-metal stress conditions, 2) to identify suitable strategies eg., soil amendments, bio-inoculants etc., to improve the plant growth and overall phytoremediation process in metal contaminated field soils..
- Plant-metal-microbe interaction
-
Heavy metal pollution in soils negatively affects the plant health, survival and productivity. Under such conditions, certain plant beneficial microbes (PBM) alleviate the effects of environmental stresses on plant by assisting plant nutrition acquisition, modulating plant hormone levels, inducing accumulation of osmolytes and antioxidants, and up or down regulating the growth-related genes in plants. The objectives of our research are a) to explore the role of PBM on stress-regulated and -responsive mechanisms in plants for improving our knowledge on plant microbe metal interactions and microbe-mediated stress tolerance in plants and b) exploring the mechanism of metal-microbes-plant interactions by analysing the complete genome sequences for several environmentally relevant microorganisms, mechanism of microbial chelators-metal complex uptake in plants, factors influencing the solubility and plant availability of nutrients/ heavy metals, signaling processes that occur between plant roots and microbes, etc.
- Climate change biology
-
The combined abiotic stress parameters greatly affect the plant growth and productivity. For instance, the climatic (eg., drought, elevated atmospheric CO2 and increased atmospheric temperature etc., ) and heavy metal stress alter plant growth, physiology, biochemistry, heavy metal/nutrient uptake and yield. The objectives of this work are to a) identify the factors which influence heavy metal and nutrient uptake by food crops in response to future climate changes and b) to identify suitable strategies to improve plant growth, yield and tolerance to multi-stress condition (eg., metal and climate stress) without accumulating toxic heavy metals
