DC Plasma Spray TBC Coatings

Conventional and solution precursor plasma spraying (SPPS) techniques were employed for developing gadolinium oxide doped lanthanum cerate ((La0.9Gd0.1)2Ce2O7, Gd-LC) based double-layered thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). Hot corrosion studies of the above coatings were carried out in molten Na2SO4 + V2O5 (1:1) environment at 900 °C. The state-of-the-art yttria-stabilized-zirconia (YSZ) coating was found to be completely delaminated after 120 h by forming yttrium vanadate (YVO4) and m-ZrO2. The accelerated delamination of YSZ can be attributed to the undesired phase transformation during exposure to corrosive species. Double-layered APS coatings were found to last for more than 300 h without densification of underlying YSZ layer and also, show better adherence with bond coat. SPPS Gd-LC coatings were found to be completely delaminated on densifying the underlying YSZ within 300 h. Lanthanum vanadate (LaVO4) was found to be the main corrosive product along with minor amounts of gadolinium vanadate (GdVO4) in Gd-LC double-layer coatings.

Low Temperature Plasma

Research into the design of new biopolymers/polymer functionalized with nanoparticles is of tremendous interest to the medical sector, particularly with regard to blood-contacting devices. A steady blood compatible and active antibacterial coating was fabricated by the grafting of titanium dioxide (TiO2)/polyvinylpyyrolidone (PVP) onto a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film surface via the direct-current glow discharge plasma method. To enhance the chemical interaction between TiO2/PVP and PVC, the surfaces of the PVC films were functionalized by different plasmas (air, argon, and oxygen) before coating. Then, the different plasma treatments on the PVC films, TiO2/PVP were grafted using a simple dip-coating method. In addition, the TiO2/PVP-grafted PVC films were characterized by contact angle, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscope, and x-ray photo electron spectroscopy. Importantly, TiO2/PVP is grafted onto the PVC surface due to the plasma-based retained functionality and demonstrates adhesive efficiency, which was observed by XPS. The bio-stability of the TiO2/PVP-modified PVC film was evaluated by in vitro platelet activation analysis and protein adsorption analysis. Then, the antibacterial properties were evaluated by the agar diffusion method against Escherichia coli.

Surface Modification, Superhydrophobic, Superoleophobic coatings

Superhydrophobic surfaces play a significant role in functional materials which are the most important part of surface and interface science. Superhydrophobic materials for oil/water separation have become a worldwide research topic due to the industrial waste and oil leak causing environmental pollution. A single step, solvent free method to fabricate superhydrophobic surface seems to be challenging. The current study focuses on a new and advancement methodology to fabricate fluorine and silane free smart oil-recovery materials without adverse environmental consequences. A superhydrophobic PET fabric is fabricated by DC glow discharge oxygen plasma treatment which is a simple and quick method. The incorporation of functional groups to the PET fabric promoted the superhydrophobic nature of the fabric with the water contact angle of 163°. The as prepared fabric possess excellent repellency to water, milk, coffee and can be applied as an effective material for oil/water separation, protective garments, diaper pads and other medical and health supplies.
