Biomaterials and Implants for Biomedical Applications

The number of revision surgeries has increased at about the same rate as the number of primary surgeries of joint replacement due to prostheses failures. In a decade-long research program, Ballamurugan's research group made essential breakthroughs in developing three different generations of polymer-ceramic hybrid acetabular sockets, namely HDPE-HA-Al2O3 hybrid composites, polyethylene grafted graphene oxide (GO) reinforced high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites. For example, a new synthesis approach was developed to chemically couple GO in polymer blends, which resulted in high mechanical strength (~65 MPa) and wear resistance properties with acceptable biocompatibility. Biomechanical analysis of principal stresses in the periprosthetic bone around the acetabular joint was the new implant design. Current efforts are underway to adopt machine learning algorithms to accelerate the implant design. The augmented bone tissue regeneration around the variants of the hybrid composite was demonstrated in both cylindrical and segmental defect models in femurs of experimental rabbits for up to 26 weeks. This work has entered into a clinical study, which has been conceived to evaluate the safety of the new generation acetabular liners in patients undergoing hip replacement surgery.

Engineering Ceramics

Professor A. M. Ballamurugan has made contributions at the frontiers of Engineering Ceramics, combining experimental to develop materials for atomic energy, aerospace and renewable energy-related applications. In particular, Ballamurugan’s research group has pioneered new multifunctional ceramics for applications ranging from human healthcare to hypersonic space vehicles to concentrated solar power. A common thread that runs through these research programs is his understanding in manipulating processing approaches and in combining computational analysis with performance-qualifying property measurements; while establishing process-structure-property linkages for a wide spectrum of oxide and non-oxide ceramics. Ballamurugan’s early research postulated a critical role of dopant distribution in transformation toughness of ZrO2, MnO2, MgO2, ZnO2, and Rare Earth Metal–based composites.
