Microplastic Pollution

Microplastics are considered one of the serious threats to the marine environment. Microplastics occurrence has been observed from minute zooplankton to higher animals. We conducted an ingestion experiment on A. franciscana using fluorescently labelled polystyrene microplastics. The results revealed that the ingestion of microplastics was the dose-depended manner in A. franciscana. Further, the decreased survival and growth, and increased metabolic enzymes were observed in A. franciscana exposed microspheres when compared to unexposed Artemia which shows that the exposure of polystyrene microspheres produced adverse effects on Artemia. This experiment suggests that the exposure of polystyrene microplastics can produce adverse effects on A. franciscana at the zooplanktonic stage which will affect higher tropical organisms through the food chain.

Aquaculture

Feeds play a significant role in aquaculture operations which determine the quality production of aquatic organisms. In our laboratory, we are working to produce low-cost aquafeeds and feeds with immune-stimulating ability. We proved that the complete replacement of fish meal and partial replacement of algal meal with fisheries waste meal increased survival, growth, digestive enzyme activities and muscle compositions of the freshwater fish and shrimps. Also, we observed better growth performance, digestive enzymes and antioxidants activities in the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei fed with seaweeds polysaccharides encapsulated Artemia nauplii. These technologies would be beneficial to the Aquafeed industries to formulate cost-effective and immune-stimulating feed for the benefit of aqua farmers and Entrepreneurs.

Ocean Acidification

Acidification in the marine environment has become a global issue that creates serious threats to marine organisms. We evaluated the effect of CO2 driven acidification on the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei and Artemia franciscana from a climate change perspective. The results revealed that survival, growth, biochemical constitutes, chitin, and hemocyte populations of studied organisms were significantly decreased in CO2 driven acidified seawater which shows the negative impacts of acidified seawater on shrimp and brine shrimp. Further, the level of antioxidants, lipid peroxidation, and metabolic enzymes was significantly higher in shrimps and brine shrimps reared under acidified seawater suggests that these animals had oxidative stress and metabolic stress. Hence, our experiments showed that the elevated level of seawater acidification can produce harmful effects on marine organisms.
