Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the former secretary of DD R&D at the Ministry of Defense, signed an agreement between the DRDO and Bharathiar University for the joint project on April 18, 1998.On June 6, 2005, His Excellency Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, President of India, officially launched the facility in the presence of the Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor, and Chancellor as well as DRDO Higher authorities.

The Centre was launched by his excellence Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, The President of India in the presence of Shri. Surjit Singh Barnala, The Chancellor and Governor of Tamilnadu and Shri. Ce. V. Shanmugam, Pro-Chancellor and Education Minister, Government of Tamil Nadu on June 06, 2005.

Hon’ble Shri. A. K. Antony, Union Minister for Defence, Govt. of India inaugurated the Centre on February 02, 2010 in the presence of Honorable Shri. N. Pongalur Palaniswamy, Minister for Rural Industries and Animal Husbandry, Governemnt of Tamil Nadu and Shri. P. K. Singh, Secretary, Defence production.
