Department of Commerce

The Department of Commerce was started in the year 1990 as a Research Department with Ph.D as the only course with Finance, Marketing, Accounting and Human Resource Management as specialization. Apart from the core specialization the department is also contributing to the allied activities such as Consumer 
issues and Skill Development.

The Department was headed by the eminent person Dr.M.MANICKAM who was the founder head of the department. With his succession plan, the department has been approved to guide M.Phil Scholars in the year 1994. Further, the department marched successfully to equip the PG students and started M.Sc (Finance and Computer Applications) during the year 2001 which was later renamed as M.Com (Finance and Computer Applications) in 2010 with a sanctioned strength of 30.

Since 2005, the department has been growing by introducing new courses establishing a full fledged Research department offering M.Phil and Ph.D with permanent faculty members. In 2009, a new course of M.Com (Finance and Accounting) with a sanctioned strength of 30 was started under the able guidance of Former Professor & Head Dr.G.GANESAN with one Reader and four Assistant Professors. At present, there are 141 PG Students and 26 (FT & PT) Research Scholars.

Currently the department is headed by a highly determined person Dr.M.DHANABHAKYAM who gives continuous encouragement, guidance and gracious support to develop all the activities of the department. Moreover, to train the young minds and empower them with knowledge and skills, the department has experienced 
and enthusiastic Professors and Assistant Professors with sincere and strong supporting staff. As a Diamond to the crown, the Department first of its kind in Tamilnadu has received financial support from UGC – SAP- DRS - I (Special Assistance Program) for the amount of Rs.41,00,000/- in the year 2016.

The department provides a well-developed infrastructure to support the academic and professional growth of students. The campus is designed with modern facilities that enhance the knowledge, analytical skills, and professional competence. The department is equipped with separate academic block, library, computer lab with internet facility, and Wi-Fi connectivity. Students use well-equipped computer lab with the latest softwares such as data analysis tools, financial modeling applications, and statistical packages. These labs provide hands-on experience in areas like financial analysis, stock market simulation, and data interpretation.

Classrooms are spacious, well-ventilated, and equipped with smart boards, projectors, and audio-visual aids. Seminar halls are designed with modern audio-visual equipment to support interactive and digital learning, making it easier for students to understand complex concepts. They are used for guest lectures, workshops, presentations, and industry interactions, helping students gain practical exposure and communication skills. The department provides a conducive environment for teaching, research, and innovation. It is located at the foothills of Marudhamalai along the Western Ghats. It is attracted by students from various countries.
