Department Projects

DST-FIST

The Department of Zoology was supported by DST-FIST first time during 2010 with a total project cost of Rs. 36 lakh for five years (2010-2015). The funds were efficiently utilized by the Department for improving the adequate infrastructure facilities which include major and minor equipment, library, networking facility, etc. As an outcome of this project, more than 50 research papers have been published by the faculty members in the broad field of vector biology, aquatic toxicology, aquaculture, animal diversity, etc., in highly reputed journals. Further, the Zoology Department again funded by the DST-FIST program during 2019 for five years (2019-2024) with a total cost of Rs. 54 lakh for upgrading the infrastructure facilities. The major objectives of this program including the prevalence of diseases and parasites in cultivable aquatic and terrestrial organisms using GIS, nutritional evaluation for cultivable aquatic and terrestrial organisms to improve immunity, assessment of molecular and immunological responses of various diseases and parasitic infestation, assessment of xenobiotics by using in-vivo and in-vitro models and DNA barcoding of selected cultivable aquatic and terrestrial organisms. This Department has well infrastructure facility in terms of equipment like Rear Time PCR, Gel Documentation system and UV-Visible spectrophotometer, and updated library books and networking facilities.

MoU

The memorandum of understanding between Bharathiar University, Coimbatore and ICAR - NBFGR
(National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources), Lucknow made entered into on this day of 27th February 2020 and The Main objective of this MOU is to enhance the livelihood of fishing and tribal communities by demonstrating and promoting culture based livelihood program related to fin fishes. Based on this a small demonstration hatchery with Recirculation Aquaculture System was established and inaugurated by Honorable Vice-chancellor Prof. Dr. P. Kaliraj on 17th February 2021. We have given training through this RAS facility to Women self-help group members and Aquaculture farmers in and around Bharathiar University, Vadavalli, Thondamuthur, Thudiyalur, Perur, Singanallur and Mettupalyam in Coimbatore District and also Tribal People from Karadimadi, Nilgris (Coimbatore district) for the culture of Ornamental fishes and Cultivable fishes. 

As a part of MOU to transfer the culture technology to the tribal groups for livelihood promotion. The Department of Zoology, Bharathiar University and ICAR- National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR), Lucknow organized awareness programme about biodiversity conservation at Western Ghats on 28.02.2020 for tribal people.

Based on the MOU we have jointly submitted research project proposal on “Live feeds for
Ornamental Crustaceans – An alternative to Artemia” to Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and technology, Govt. of India New Delhi.
