The Department of Tamil, one among the thirty five departments, was established on 02.08.1985. The M.Phil and Ph.D. Programmes was introduced during the academic year 1985 - 86 itself. The Post Graduate course has been launched during the academic year 1986-87.

The Department, since its inception, has been paying keen attention to research on certain thrust fields such as Sangam Literature, Grammar, Modern Literature, Folkloristic, Kongu regional history, Modern drama, Mass Media, Computer for Tamil studies etc., The Department has so far produced 475 postgraduates, 185 M.Phil.
Scholars and 114 Doctorates in the discipline of Tamil Language and Literature. Ninety percentage of the scholars who had been crowned M.Phil and Doctorate degrees from this departments, have been excelling in teaching profession and remaining Ten percentage of scholars have been serving in the fields of Journalism and Mass media.
The faculty members and the students of this Department have authored more than 200 books and 750 research articles which are being acclaimed by contemporary Tamil researchers. The Department, to its credit, organized around 100 National level Conferences, seminars, Refresher courses, workshops, Endowment Lectures, etc., A Computer Lab, Smart Class room and Department Library are available in Department of Tamil.

Realizing the significant contribution made by this Department to the Tamil research, the UGC; New Delhi honoured this Department by awarding Special Assistance Programme (SAP) in the year 2007.
