Solar Power Plant for electricity generation

Establishment of Solar Power Plants and LED Street lights 
 at Bharathiar University under RUSA Scheme

Bharathiar University is consuming grid power of around 2,14,000 units (kWh) every month to provide power to equipments for research, lights, fans and A/Cs in both administrative and academic buildings as well as street lights in the campus and paying the total electric bill of around Rs. 20,00,000/-  every month . In near future, the expected power requirement will increase sharply by expansion of the campus, increasing the population in the campus and increasing number of street lights for safety purpose.  

In order to produce clean and self sufficient electric power as well as to face the future power demands, 452 kW local grid-connected roof-top solar power plants were installed at various buildings in the University campus under RUSA scheme with a budget of Rs.266 lakhs. From these plants, around 54,000 units (kWh) of electricity can be produced per month and around 15-20% of the electric bill can be reduced.

The power generated in each plant / building can be utilized anywhere in the campus through utility grid. During the pandemic period, University has generated and utilized around 3, 17,000 units of electricity from these plants and saved around Rs. 20, 14,000 from the electricity bill. Power generation and operation of solar power plants are being monitored online through Wi-fi.

Energy saving is equally important with power generation. With this in mind, 77 SVL and CFL Street lights were replaced by LED lights in the existing poles in the University campus under RUSA scheme with a budget of Rs. 9.83 lakhs.  Benefits of this project are 

  • Significant reduction in electric bill by production and saving of electric power.
  • Become a Green Campus through taping of green energy and protecting environment. 
  • Become a model campus to create awareness to public.
