Department of Statistics

Department of Statistics was established in the year 1979 under the erstwhile Post-Graduate Centre of University of Madras. This department is a full-fledged research department. Apart from the Ph.D. research programme, the Department also offers two Post-Graduate programmes, one in core Statistics and the other is application oriented, namely Biostatistics. The department has established its identity with the contribution made through publication of research papers in the international repute in various fields of Statistics, specifically Statistical Inference and Statistical Quality Control as the thrust core area of research.

The department is committed to provide quality curriculum for students so as to enhance their capabilities in evolving new theories through research with reference to problems of social, biological and industrial environments. Apart from domain knowledge, the department inculcates the statistical software skills among the students a global vision with international competence. 

The members of faculty are associated with Professional and Academic bodies in Statistics at the International/National level and have represented in the administrative and academic bodies of the university. They presently hold the administrative positions in addition to their regular work and further engage in assignments with UGC, CSIR, UPSC, TNPSC and other academic institutions / universities in India for the development of Statistics Education as a whole. 

With a dedicated team of faculty members who have a rich experience in teaching and research are sharing their domain knowledge as course teacher and mentor. With the continued efforts of faculty members, more than 100 Doctoral degrees were awarded from this department.  The department has been recognized by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), New Delhi and by University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi under FIST programme and SAP-DRS for financial assistance, respectively.

1979 : Department was established under the erstwhile Post - Graduate Autonomous Centre of University of Madras with two research programmes, namely M.Phil. and Ph.D.

1988 : A new programme M.Sc. Applied Statistics was started.

2003 : Another programme M.Sc. Statistics with Computer Applications was started.

2008 : M.Sc. Statistics programme was started.
