Vision

The vision of the department is to shape the students in to skill full, emotionally adjusted individuals integrated with skills, studies and research activities be at institution or in the community in which he/she lives which would in turn help in the all-round development of a teaching personality.

Mission

To equip students to be suitable for employment in any part of the Globe, to impart Practical and research based quality education, to in-still in students a desire and confidence to become entrepreneurs in their chosen field of Physical education, sports and exercise science.

History

The Department of Physical Education was established in 1982. The department of physical education began its post graduate programmes M.P.Ed., / M.Phil., / Ph.D in the academic year 2002 - 03. Our B.P.Ed., and M.P.Ed., programmes have been recognized by NCTE with current methodology of curriculum. Its core functions are academics, research, organising tournaments at various levels from national to intramural. Ever since its inception it has been conducting many Inter - University, Inter - Collegiate and Open Tournaments in the field of sports and participating in the All India Inter University tournaments. The department coordinates the game and sports activities of the affiliated colleges and provides opportunities for the students to demonstrate their competence in inter- collegiate sports meets. The department is also responsible for the selection of the university teams to participate in the All India Inter - University tournaments.

Programs offered

Our department offers B.P.Ed., M.P.Ed., on regular mode, M.Phil., and Ph.D on regular and parttime mode and also PG Diplomas programs in Fitness management and Yoga

Student life

The PG programs offered are on residential mode for which accommodation is provided in semi furnished sports hostels on payment bases. Every student of department of physical education has the opportunity to be in touch with the latest information with regard to techniques, rules and interpretations of various games through modern teaching aids. As an exemplary department of learning physical education and sports the department admits students entirely on the basis of merit in sports and academics. The admission policy encourages students from all stages of our country.

Research activities

Our department is known for its research contribution across the state. Three of our faculty members had completed major research projects awarded by UGC and DRDO. One of our faculty members had received a young scientist fellowship and also completed a student project scheme by getting a minor grant for PG research. Two more had been sanctioned projects from the funding agencies RUSA and TANSCHE this year. Our faculties have published many research articles in reputed International journals which are UGC listed. More than 50 books in total had been published by our faculty members. Our scholars also publish articles and author books and Research is a compulsory task for our PG students and every year dissertation is being submitted.

Extension activities

Our department plays a dual role. Academics and organisation of tournaments. In academics side guest lectures are organised for subjects with are not included in the NCTE BPEd and MPEd syllabus, such as chess, carom, karate, first aid and other employability skills career guidance, menstrual health, Interview skill training, spoken English. We regularly organise conferences, seminars and workshops at International, National and State level. We also organise International and national level competitions at our university which includes ranking tournaments, All India Inter university tournaments, South zone level, Open nationals, State level, District level and even for children with special needs.

International Level Achievements

In the year 2018 one of our staff Visited Malaysia for giving an invited talk on Indian sports policies for the UG students of Faculty of Physical education, University Technology MARA, Malaysia. She also presented a research paper in an International conference, held research discussions and visited laboratories. In the year 2019 five of our faculty members presented papers in International conference. One person at Dubai presented a paper in Tamil and other four at Southeast Asean Games Scientific Conference, Philipines. This year one of our faculty members had been invited as a resource person for a conference at a QS world ranked university, University of Malaya, Malaysia. Two of our university research scholars had got their acceptance to present paper in an international conference this year at Malaysia.
Our university students had participated in World University games held at South Korea and Taiwan. Many elite athletes of our university had participated in the International level tournaments across the world and fetched laurels to the university.
