Department of Sociology and Population Studies

Genesis

Established in 1976, the department offers M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes, and from its inception, 31 students were awarded Ph.D. degree and 167 were awarded M.Phil. degree. Resolved to profess sociological perspective and with receptivity to change and transformation, the Department has a vision to be an active partner in the development of this region through research partnerships with private businesses corporations, government agencies, and social and community service organizations. The pursuit, analysis and dissemination of sociological knowledge for social good continue to be the mission. The curricula of the department also aims at providing expert training to promote more effective delivery in public and private human service organizations. With faculty at the discipline’s cutting edge, we seek to develop the next generation of sociologists

Salient Features

Courses are taught through a combination of lectures, seminar sessions, case analysis, group stimulation, quiz, assignments, and fieldwork. Whilst students are offered academic input from specialists, there is also an emphasis on the use of students’ own experience and on their active involvement in the learning process.

The department recognizes research and evaluation as cornerstones of policy-making and effective programming. Committed to building research-practice partnerships, staff members are capable of engaging in a multifaceted set of activities comprised of research studies, demonstration projects, program evaluations, and training evaluations.

Milestones
  • The department of Sociology had submitted a proposal to the UGC during 2004 to establish Centre for Women Studies and got approval in the 2005. The Centre was with the department for two years and later it functions as a separate department. 
  • The department has established Master of Social Work Course  in the year 2006 
Roll of Honour
  • The Department of Sociology has its historical roots in the faculty of social sciences as it was established in 1976, at the time of the Honourable Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Malcom S. Adiseshiah, University of Madras and Dr. C. M. Abraham headed the Department with the following faculties during the years 1978-1987. 
  • Dr. C. M. Abraham as the Head of the department has brought a remarkable growth in teaching, research and relevance of extension activities for the society. They also academically contributed in bringing the department on par with other social sciences department of the university. 
  • The department march forward with Dr. Lakshman Singh as Head of the department and Dr. U.R. Kaliappan, and Dr.T.Chandramohan Reddy as professors.
  • Dr.T.Chandramohan Reddy has headed the department from 2005 onwards along with a newly joined faculty, Dr.N.R. Suresh Babu. 
  • In the year 2006, the Department of Sociology was merged with Department of Population Studies that was being headed by Dr.N. Audinarayana, Professor of Population Studies up to 2015. 
  • Dr.N.R. Suresh Babu Associate Professor took over and disseminated as Head In-charge till March, 2017. Currently, the department is being headed by Dr. S. Sampath Kumar as a Professor who joined in the year 2016.
