SOCIOLOGICAL ENGAGEMENTS

Department of Sociology and Population studies at Bharathiar University give importance to the sociological engagements in the field along with the classroom learning. Keeping that in mind, the department has incorporated the field and industrial visits as the part of the curriculum activity. Through this engagement and along with the academic inputs the students will be equipped to handle the reality other than curriculum by gaining practical experience through field work.

In 2018 December, as part of their curriculum, they had an industrial visit to the “National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj”, Telangana, which is an autonomous organisation under the Union Ministry of Rural Development. It is a premier national centre of excellence in rural development and Panchayati Raj. Through the visit, the students had a wonderful experience of understanding the functions of NIRD as they had studied in their course Rural Sociology.

Following the same, along with NIRD industrial visit, the students visited the Department of Sociology, University of Hyderabad where they got an opportunity to explore and had interaction with faculties and students. And they had spent quality time in the university library and department library as a part of the visit.

In March, 2019 students of the Department of Sociology and Population studies had a visit to a NGO called “Gramalaya” as a part of their curriculum.  It was established in 1987 with a group of committed youths in the field of rural development. They successfully demonstrated models in the field of water, sanitation, and hygiene with various demographic conditions covering rural, urban, coastal and tribal areas and had gained an international name in the area of the sanitation for more than three decades with the support of the Government, and various other corporate groups.  This fieldwork helped the students to understand the overall working pattern of the NGO.
