The various research activities in the University were not much affected by the COVID-19 lockdown. The lockdown provided an opportunity for its faculty members to develop products for protecting against COVID. One of the researches in the Department of Human Genetics and Molecular Biology during that period funded by RUSA 2.0 BEICH resulted in the development of a nano-fibre based respiratory Face Mask Infused with Herbal Extracts having antiviral properties.
These face masks provide protection against the COVID infection and the technology was later transferred to industry for large-scale production and marketing to the public. A second personal protective product ‘Microbescura’ was developed by the faculty of Computer Science during the pandemic.
This disinfection cabinet uses the ultraviolet germicidal irradiation for decontaminating materials handled by multiple users in places like offices, Banks, hospitals, etc. The Department of Physics has developed a Plasma Technology to recover Gold and Silver from jewellery wastes.
This technology can replace the currently used conventional chemical route in recovery of these precious metals from jewellery wastes. Some of the merits of this plasma technology over conventional chemical methods are short processing time, lower processing cost and environmental friendly. In addition, the University also encourages entrepreneurship, innovators, and start-ups.
