M.Phil. / Ph.D in Physics

M. Phil.

The department offers a regular M. Phil. program in Physics. The selected students who meet the prescribed eligibility and selection criteria can opt for the various specializations offered in the department. After the successful completion of Part-I exams, students will be trained to work on research problems. Upon successful completion of the thesis, students have to defend the work in a public viva-voce exam. Most of our students after completion of this course, join for Ph. D. program. Some of the students join as faculty members in arts and science colleges as well as in engineering colleges.

In order to apply for the M. Phil. program, the candidate requires a minimum score of 10 marks out of 35 in the common eligibility tests conducted by the Bharathiar University for admission to the M. Phil program.

However, the candidates who qualify in UGC-NET (including JRF) / UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF) / SLET / SET / GATE, scientists working in DRDO, faculty of Air Force Administrative College, holders of teacher fellowship (like FIP and FDP), and candidates of foreign origin possessing prescribed qualifications shall be exempted from appearing CET.

Ph. D.

Our department offers regular and part-time Ph.D., programs right from inception. The selected students who meet the prescribed eligibility and selection criteria can opt for the various specializations offered in the department. After the successful completion of Part-I exams, students will be trained to work on research problems.

During their research period, the research student

  • mostly get stipends/fellowships from University or through funding agencies
  • is mentored by the respective guides. Guides will monitor the progress regularly
  • are given free hand to use state of sophisticated equipment and computational facilities in their respective labs.
  • present their research findings at National and International conferences.
  • publish their research findings in peer-reviewed national and international journals.
  • are given the opportunity to present their work in the weekly seminar of the Department.
  • has to compulsorily present pre-Ph.D. seminar before submission of the thesis.
  • progress is monitored by a doctoral committee.
  • can submit the thesis after the approval by the doctoral committee
  • the thesis will be evaluated by a foreign and an Indian examiner and upon their satisfactory remarks, the student will be allowed to present his thesis in a public viva-voce exam.

After completion of the Ph. D., degree most of our students go abroad for doing their post-doctoral work. Some students opt for the teaching profession.

In order to apply for the Ph.D. program, the candidate requires a minimum score of 10 marks out of 35 in the common eligibility tests conducted by the Bharathiar University for admission to the M.

The students who have cleared M. Phil., also need not appear for the CET.
