Department of Microbial - Biotechnology - Major Facilities

Core instrumentation facility

The faculty members having specialized in different fields have established their own research laboratory. Selected sophisticated equipments used by all research scholars have been housed in Core Instrumentation facility to ensure optimum utilization of the equipment. To name a few, HPLC, Fermentor, High speed refrigerated centrifuge, Refrigerated Incubator shaker, etc., are maintained in the Core facility providing access to all research scholars including scholars from other departments and other Institutions.

Cancer therapeutics laboratory

Supervisor: Dr.J.Angayarkanni, Associate Professor & Head

The lab was initiated in 2005 under the supervision of Dr. J.Angayarkanni, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbial Biotechnology, Bharathiar University, with the aim of identifying of various microbial metabolites targeting various features of cancer cells viz. replication, immortality, angiogenesis and metastasis. The ultimate goal of the research team is formulation of combinatorial drug targeting cancer cells. Besides that, unravelling the significance of unexplored enzyme Pterin deaminase and pteridines is one another objective of the research team.

Clinical Biotechnology Lab

Supervisor: Dr.V.BrindhaPriyadarisini, Assistant Professor

Thrust area of this research unit is prospecting of active antimicrobial metabolites from actinobacteria.Antibiofilm and antiquorum sensing property of the identified metabolite is also determined against common human pathogens. It also works in isolation and identification of probiotics and prebiotics from different sources.

Biopharmacy Lab

Supervisor: Dr.K.Preethi, Assistant Professor

Working towards a greener and eco-friendly sustainable environment,by exploring current environmental issues and formulation of commercially important bio products like feed formulation, biofertilizers in tune with waste management. Majorworks in the production of bioplastics from environmental wastes. And also working on isolation and applications of antioxidants from microbes.

Translational Plant Research Lab (TPRL)

Supervisor: Dr.G.Kapildev, Assistant Professor

Focuses on plant cell, tissue and organ culture; plant genetic engineering; plant microbiome research and plant biodiversity conservation.

Natural Product Research Lab

Supervisor: Dr.M.Gnanadesigan, Assistant Professor

This lab mainly focuses on the identification of active molecules from natural resources as an antimalarial substance. Improvement of rapid detection kits for the Pv and Pf diagnosis. Drug repurposing strategies using nanotechnology applications for the enhancement of the malarial treatment therapy.Development of malarial TB- Vaccine candidates.
