The department came into existence as part of the PG centre of Madras University in the year 1973. Since 1982, the department has emerged as one of the full-fledged university department of Bharathiar University. During the inception, the department functioned with 3 faculty members. Later three more faculty members joined the team and the research area diversified more with different specializations such as synthetic organic chemistry, natural product chemistry, medicinal chemistry, coordination chemistry, organometallics, and solid-state chemistry.
The department awarded 136 Ph.D. and 200 M.Phil. degrees and 650 Postgraduate students. Currently, XX doctoral students who have obtained their Ph.D. degree from the department have been employed as scientists in industries (or) as Post-Doctoral fellows in Universities of USA, Canada, Europe, Japan, and South Korea. Further, some of the alumni from the department currently are working in reputed institutions such as IISc, NIT and CECRI of national importance.
Since 1973, the department started offering M.Phil., and Ph.D., in chemistry. P.G. program in chemistry was started in the year 1989 to promote innovative curriculum development and motivate the students to focus on advances in chemical science thereby the students are trained for professional employment. To meet the industrial demand, the Department has started M.Sc. organic chemistry in the year 2008 which pave the way to acquire theoretical as well as practical knowledge.

The faculty members operated various projects sponsored by UGC, CSIR, ICMR, DRDO and DST-SERC/SERB etc. and the faculty members published more than a thousand research articles in the SCI journals of high standard with good impact factor. DST identified the department under FUND FOR IMPROVEMENT OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (FIST) and sanctioned Rs. 39,00,000.00 in 2003 to rebuild the infrastructure facility. With this support, the existing laboratories have been upgraded to individual sophisticated laboratories.
Under the UGC special assistance program (SAP) and Department Research Support (DRS) to enhance the standard of research and teaching to match with the international standard, the department is one which received Rs. 38,00,000.00 under UGC-SAP-DRS Phase-I. After successful completion of Phase-I, the department received Rs.73,00,000.00 under UGS-SAP-DRS Phase-II. The department has completed a project worth runs Rs. 428 crores projects funded by various agencies like UGC, DRDO, CSIR, and DST-SERB.

Our labs and research facilities are available 24 X 7 for the convenience of the Research scholars. We are encouraging research scholar to go abroad for doing part of their Ph.D research work in international laboratories.
Many Ph.D scholars received post doctoral offers from various countries like USA, France, South Africa,Spain,Canada,Japan,South Korea and Taiwan.
We provide freedom to research scholar to have collaboration with national and international scientists. Research scholars are regularly receiving travel grants to participate in the international conferences.
We create awareness about the disposal of chemicals and solvents among the research scholars and PG students without affect the environments
