- Genesis
The department came into existence as part of the PG Centre of Madras University in the year 1973. Since 1982, the department has emerged as one of the full-fledged University Department of Bharathiar University. During the inception, the department functioned with 3 faculty members. Further three more faculty members joined the team and the research area diversified with different specializations such as synthetic organic chemistry, natural product chemistry, medicinal chemistry, coordination chemistry, organometallics, and solid-state chemistry. Later six faculty members have joined in the department and the research area expanded with other specializations including physical chemistry, electrochemistry and environmental chemistry.
The department has awarded 163 Ph.D. and 200 M.Phil. degrees and 710 Postgraduate students. Currently, most of the doctoral students who have obtained their Ph.D. degree from the department have been employed as Scientists in industries (or) as Post-Doctoral fellows in Universities of USA, Canada, Europe, Japan, South Korea and China. Currently, some of the alumni of the department are working as faculty members in reputed institutions such as IISc, NIT, Universities and so on.
Since 1973, the department started offering M.Phil., and Ph.D., in chemistry. P.G. program in chemistry was started in the year 1989 to promote innovative curriculum development and motivate the students to focus on advances in chemical science thereby the students are trained for professional employment.
- Salient Features
The faculty members operated various sponsored projects funded by TANSCHE, CMRG, UGC, CSIR, ICMR, DRDO, ANRF and DST-SERC/SERB etc and the faculty members published more than a thousand research articles in the SCI journals of high standard with good impact factor. The Department of Science & Technology (DST) has identified the department under Fund for Improvement of Science and Technology (FIST) and sanctioned Rs.39 lakhs in 2003 and Rs.75 lakhs in 2021 to rebuild the infrastructure facility. With this support, the existing laboratories have been upgraded to sophisticated laboratories.
Under the UGC special assistance program (SAP) and Department Research Support (DRS) to enhance the standard of research and teaching to match with the international standard, the department is one which received Rs.38 lakhs under UGC-SAP-DRS Phase-I. After successful completion of Phase-I, the department received Rs.73 lakhs under UGS-SAP-DRS Phase-II. The department has completed the sponsored project worth runs Rs.650 lakhs projects funded by various agencies like UGC, DRDO, CSIR, and DST-SERB.

Our labs and research facilities are available 24 × 7 for the convenience of the Research scholars. We are encouraging research scholar to go abroad for doing part of their Ph.D research work in international laboratories. Many Ph.D. scholars received post-doctoral offers from various countries like USA, France, China, Spain, Canada, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.
We provide freedom to research scholar to have collaboration with national and international scientists. Research scholars are regularly receiving travel grants to participate in the international conferences.
We create awareness about the safety precautions in the laboratory, safe disposal of chemicals and solvents and importantly emphasized to use green methodology and solvents among the research scholars and PG students without affecting the environments.
