The origin of the Department of Psychology was one of the significant contributions by Padmashree N. D. Sundarvadivelu, the Beacon Light of education in Tamil Nadu and the former Vice-Chancellor of University of Madras. The Department was one of the four Departments started to constitute the Madras University Autonomous Post Graduate Centre, Coimbatore in 1974.

Vision

The vision of the department is to shape the students in to skill full, emotionally adjusted individuals integrated with skills, studies and research activities be at institution or in the community in which he/she lives which would in turn help in the all-round development of a teaching personality.

Mission

From the existence as a component of Department of Biotechnology, Department of Microbial Biotechnology emerged as an individual department in the year 2008 with two teaching faculty members to nurture it. In the next 5 years, two more faculty members have been appointed to expand the research focus areas which encompassed Bioprocess technology, Cancer therapeutics, Clinical Biotechnology and Biopharmacy.

The Department of Mathematics was established in 1978 as the Department of Applied Mathematics in the erstwhile Post Graduate Centre of University of Madras.  Later in 1982 when Bharathiar University was formed by the Government of Tamil Nadu, the Department came under Bharathiar University as the Department of Mathematics.  .

Established in 1985, the Department of Linguistics has emerged as a centre of excellence in teaching and research. The department offers M.A. and Ph.D. programmes and is actively engaged in advanced research across multiple domains of linguistics.

The Department of Library and Information Science at Bharathiar University is one of the new departments in the field of Library and Information Science education in India. The Department was established in 2008. The Department is blooming under the able leadership of Dr R. Sarangapani, Head i/c. The Department conducts a 2-years integrated Master of Library & Information Science (M.Lib.I.Sc.) Programme. Apart from M.Lib.I.Sc.

To meet the growing demands in the field of Science and Technology in general and Computer Science in particular, the Department of Information Technology was started in the year 2008 under School of Computer Science and Engineering with the objective of imparting knowledge in cutting-edge technologies in Information Technology and Computer Science.

The Department of Human Genetics and Molecular Biology, is the first Department in this field in Southern India, fertilized in the womb of the Department of Zoology as a unit of Human Molecular Genetics. It grew into an individual Department during June 2014. This Department is established with a sole intention of exploring and treating various genetic diseases in humans.

The Department of History and Tourism has been started in the academic year (2016-17). It is a pioneering venture of the university devoted to the cause of historical study with a view to contribute to research in History. As the saying goes “History makes men wise”, the department offers papers to improve the understanding of the students about the world events and relate them to the present scenario as such.
