Department of Statistics was established in 1979 with one Professor under the erstwhile Post - Graduate Autonomous Centre of University of Madras. Initially, two research programmes leading to Ph.D., and M.Phil., Degrees in Statistics were offered in the Department with two fields of research specialization, namely Statistical Quality Control and Statistical Inference.

Established in 1976, the department offers M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes, and from its inception, 31 students were awarded Ph.D. degree and 167 were awarded M.Phil. degree. Resolved to profess sociological perspective and with receptivity to change and transformation, the Department has a vision to be an active partner in the development of this region through research partnerships with private businesses corporations, government agencies, and social and community service organizations.

Department of Social Work, Bharathiar University journey began in 2007. The primary focus of the department is to build the capacities of young graduates on the threshold of fruitful careers in Social Work. We strive to establish knowledge and practice through a range of ideological stances as reflected in the Social Work curriculum, complex domains of the practice, research and field engagements. The students are subjected to concurrent Field Work training in all four semesters.

The origin of the Department of Psychology was one of the significant contributions by Padmashree N. D. Sundarvadivelu, the Beacon Light of education in Tamil Nadu and the former Vice-Chancellor of University of Madras. The Department was one of the four Departments started to constitute the Madras University Autonomous Post Graduate Centre, Coimbatore in 1974.

Vision

The vision of the department is to shape the students in to skill full, emotionally adjusted individuals integrated with skills, studies and research activities be at institution or in the community in which he/she lives which would in turn help in the all-round development of a teaching personality.

Mission

From the existence as a component of Department of Biotechnology, Department of Microbial Biotechnology emerged as an individual department in the year 2008 with two teaching faculty members to nurture it. In the next 5 years, two more faculty members have been appointed to expand the research focus areas which encompassed Bioprocess technology, Cancer therapeutics, Clinical Biotechnology and Biopharmacy.

The Department of Mathematics was established in 1978 as the Department of Applied Mathematics in the erstwhile Post Graduate Centre of University of Madras.  Later in 1982 when Bharathiar University was formed by the Government of Tamil Nadu, the Department came under Bharathiar University as the Department of Mathematics.  .

The Department of Linguistics was established in the year 1985. Since its inception, the department is successfully doing higher researches and offering courses leading to M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D degrees. In addition to these, the Department has taken up academic extension activities in the socially relevant areas such as tribal literacy, adult literacy, teacher training, etc.

The Department of Library and Information Science at Bharathiar University is one of the new departments in the field of Library and Information Science education in India. The Department was established in 2008. The Department is blooming under the able leadership of Dr R. Sarangapani, Head i/c. The Department conducts a 2-years integrated Master of Library & Information Science (M.Lib.I.Sc.) Programme. Apart from M.Lib.I.Sc.
